KY PHILOSOPHY
We are organized, and operate for one purpose, "To help children ages 6 - 18 be the best they can be". Through a rigorous educational tutorial and summer track program, the children learn that hard work pays dividends. They get to train with kids from the Greater Baton Rouge Area and surrounding Parishes, and see different cultures (as they participate in several track meets around Louisiana and the United States) that many in our community have not had the opportunity to experience.
Good Morals and Family Values
The club developed, and has in force, a code of conduct for all adults associated with the club, including: parents, coaches, officers, and board members. Our organization believes that the attitude and behavior of children are strongly influenced by the actions of the adults with whom they are associated. Accordingly, the adults must be a positive influence or not be associated with the club. Similarly, the club has in force a code of conduct for the children. They must adhere to certain standards of dress, language, and behavior, including prohibition on use of drugs, alcohol & tobacco. They are required to respect all adults, especially their parents.
Education
K-Y provides an educational program geared to enhancing children test taking skills in preparation for ACT and LEAP tests that are required by the Louisiana State Department of Education.
In addition, coaches and officers constantly advised our children that they must succeed first in the classroom in order to become good and productive citizens. The fastest of runners have failed in life due to the lack of education. Children are also encouraged to participate in track and field with their schools, with the understanding that this is a privilege granted to those students who meet certain academic standards in high school and later in college. Many of our past members are presently enrolled in college by virtue of athletic scholarships.
Track & Field
We believe that there is something in track & field for every child regardless of size or speed. Each has some optimum level of performance. Our goal is to work with children to ensure that each reach their optimum level of performance. In order to reach this level not only must the child go through rigorous physical training, but also eat nutritiously, stays hydrated, and get appropriated rest. Once children experience success in reaching a goal based on the sweat of their brow, they develop an attitude that they can succeed if they work hard in any area. We at K-Y believe that "success breeds success". With meager resources and a host of volunteers, the success of the program is easily measured by merely observing the quality of individuals who have participated and are presently participating in the program. Financial assistance is needed to insure that our program is a continued success.
